An attempt at skin perfection: Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

I’m a sucker for gimmicks, especially when it comes to beauty. I’d seen a few bloggers discussing the new Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water, so when I spotted it in Boots, I thought I would try it out. Plus, with a wonderfully thrifty price tag, I didn’t even need to think twice.

With my skin in the past, I’ve definitely noticed that using a toner and cleanser routine clears up my skin blemishes really well. I’m not one to wear make-up, so when I do I ensure to look after my skin as much as possible (or find a product that repairs the damage I’ve caused when I forget to do so).

Although face wipes are incredibly handy, there’s no ignoring the sore, skin-irritation that they can cause after manic rubbing sessions. I’m definitely one for forgetting to take my make-up off after nights out, so I need something that is quite thorough – especially when it comes to mascara.

With the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water, it’s clear complexion did make me a little skeptical about it’s cleaning power. But upon application, my make-up slid of very easily. The only thing I miss from products such as this, is a bit of an oily base, helping to lift off stubborn make-up. However, the cleansing water gently pulls the make-up off in a few swipes. Although, I did feel the need to repeat certain sections with more stubborn patches of make-up.

My favourite thing about this product is how easily it cleans the groggy mascara off my eyelashes. Even if I had to repeat the motion until my eyes felt clean, the process felt gentle which is something that I search for when it comes to the eye area. Another bonus for me was the lack of sting in this product around the eyes – it was practically non-existent.

After the make-up had been cleaned off, there wasn’t a desperate need to drown my face in moisturiser either because my skin felt very hydrated. In a nutshell, this product basically makes your skin feel as if it’s just drunk a large bottle of water – completely re-hydrated and fresh.

Whether morning after the night befores or just day-to-day cleansing, the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water, maintains its promises.

NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray

If you have been following my blog recently you would have read about my fabulous internship with Good Housekeeping magazine. On my last day with the magazine, the beauty department decided to clear through their masses of free product and throw a beauty sale ‘eeeeeek’. I was incredibly lucky to be there drooling over the selection and of course I grabbed as many beauty bargains as possible (whilst attempting to maintain my dignity in case I was to ever see these lovely people again).

One of the products that I was able to grab was this NYX Setting Spray. Now, I’ve never used a setting spray before – I’m a novice when it comes to make-up tips, but I’m always searching for cool tricks to improve the appearance of my make-up. I’m not really one to wear make-up full time – in the past I’ve tried to force it, but if I’m honest I prefer to look natural and feel clean!

Prior to using the product I checked some reviews online just to see what I should be able to expect. The reviews came from far and wide, ranting and raving about this magical product. So, I eagerly gave this NYX setting spray a go. Over the first few trials I struggled to locate the miracle make-up setting qualities. However, the spray was really put to the test during my recent day at work.

I work in the center of town, so as a skint student my journey often entails a 40 minute walk into town, before and after work. On most days I am met with horribly grizzly weather, so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to test the setting spray. To my amazement, after walking to work, plus a full day at work (involving running around like a headless chicken) and a walk home in the piddling down rain, I was absolutely delighted with the state of my make-up on my return. Usually, my Benefit blusher is the first thing to leave me during a long day, however when I arrived home it was still present with barely any signs of fading. My Laura Mercier highlighter was still glowing gladly on my cheekbones and down the center of my nose. Even my Clinique eye shadow remained in tact without any signs of cracking or fading. I was thrilled. I only used 3 pumps of the spray and I was very surprised with the holding time that the product gives. Plus as someone who hates the feeling of make-up, I was incredibly happy with the lightweight feel to the product.

Finally, the promised dewy element to the product picked up the various products on my face that used highlighting tones, which was great. I will definitely be testing this setting spray on a night out to fully put it to the test – where else would be better than a sweaty disco box?

In the mean time, I think I’ve just discovered my latest love!

Making my mark….

I’ve never been someone to have a certain perfume that I can call my ‘signature scent’. I’ve played around with various scents and most of time I fall in love with all of them. At the moment I’m experimenting with a handful that I have been bought over the Christmas period, which is great because it means I can switch it up every now and then, refreshing my palette.

My favourite perfume is tied between the Givenchy ‘Amariage’ and the Narciso Rodriguez ‘for her’ scents. I find them both to be quite musky, which is something I love because it seems to give that sense of clinging on to skin and fabric, rather than just bouncing off – and that it does. Although, like everyone I begin to lose the actual notes of the perfume the more I tire the bottle, but I’m reminded whenever I wear the same scarf or top that still holds the scent well.

Narciso Rodriguez is wonderfully musky, based around rose scents. This is an aroma where my love will never cease, it’s a staple that I will re-purchase again and again. With amber and woody notes, this has become my ultimate perfume. It’s a no fuss, elegant essence.

Daisy by Marc Jacobs is a new perfume for me. Still retaining a musky side, this scent is much more fruitier compared to Narciso, but it retains a beautifully feminine element. With ascents of jasmine and violet petals, this perfume comes across as being quite florally rich. I’m definitely enjoying this perfume and funnily enough whenever I wear it, I tend to get compliments on the smell!

Listen to this: London Grammar

I’ve come to understand the fact that I am ALWAYS late on the music bandwagon, but it’s better late than never right? I recently fell in love with a beautiful trio known as London Grammar. I think they are a vocal cross between Florence and The Machine and a composition cross of The XX. Sit back, relax and check this wonderfully, eery band out.

In the meantime, visit their wicked site to keep up to date with the ins-and-outs of their musical affairs.

Maya Rose Boutique – Student Pamper Evening

If you love all things pretty, glitzy and girly then you must head over to the Maya Rose Boutique in Leicester. Located down The Lanes, right in the center of Leicester, the quaint boutique is crammed full with an array of stunning lovelies. I recently had the privilege of attending the Maya Rose Student Pamper Event on Thursday 28th November to blog for the evening. When the event took off, the atmosphere was enhanced by a bit of bubbly and a selection of some delicious mini cakes. I even managed to grab a make-over myself!

I stumbled across the boutique with one of my girlfriends recently and we literally fell in LOVE. There are so many frillies, delicates, prints and patterns, sparkles and aromas that are certain to entice you. The Maya Rose lingerie selection is simply stunning. With the option to customise your own delicate lingerie set, you can stroll out of the boutique holding a personal set of bespoke underwear. Or if you’re obsessed with everything that sparkles, the boutique offers some beautiful, dainty accessories. Maya Rose boasts a vast collection of charm bracelets, traditional pearl accessories and classic silver earings. After all of that, you can grab a gorgeous vintage velvet jewellery roll designed by Jo Edwards.

The boutique, who is owned by the charming Jane, offered a 10% discount on all of the fancies in store throughout the student event. The pamper evening was enhanced by the delightful make-up artist Feona, and her fab Paul and Joe make-overs. We asked Feona to break down 3 simple, yet effective beauty looks that are particularly popular this season: The Smokey Eye, the Red Lip and a recent favorite, The Pink Lip.

Make Over Base

Conveniently, all three make overs use the same base, making it easy to play around with designs. For the foundation, Feona chose the Paul and Joe Moisturizing Foundation Primer.

This is a great product when creating a base, as the dual functions of  a primer and a foundation, saves time, money and effort. On application, the foundation feels very light and is incredibly illuminating as you can see. Feona also enjoyed using the Paul and Joe Self Select Eye Colour in 003 for most of the make-overs as it was neutral, yet on application, it had a shimmery base which proved very complimentary.

Most importantly, as most of us will know: you cannot forget the brows! When shading either with a pencil or brow powder, a shade slightly darker than your natural brow should be used. This will allow your eyebrows to subtly stand out. You can play around with the intensity by simply applying less or more.

The Smokey Eye

This Smokey Eye requires 4 Paul and Joe Products, so it’s extremely helpful when you’re lacking in time. Considering her first client didn’t usually wear dark make up, Feona wanted to create a subtle version of the Smokey Eye. When creating a heavy look such as this, it is important to start with a base for the eyes as this enables the colour to come out and stops the make up sliding. Begin this look with a neutral Paul and Joe shimmer base – they come out quite softly, but can be built up progressively.

Secondly, Feona used the Eye Gloss Duo  in silver and brown. The silver colour is used to spread over the entire lid and surrounding eye area, whilst the brown is spread over the lid and ever so slightly up the brow – depending on how intense you desire your look to be. After the blending has been completed, use a Paul and Joe black eyeliner along the upper lash line and underneath the lower lash line.

Using a blending brush, slowly blend out the harsh black lines, creating the smokey effect. Finally, Feona suggests using lashings of the Paul and Joe mascara.

**Key Tip For Smokey Eye: It’s all in the blending! Use your blending techniques to alter the intensity of your smokey eye. Don’t over-rely on shadows for this look, be confident enough to use a dark eyeliner instead!**

The Red Lip

The Red Lip is much simpler than the previous make-up technique, however it does require a steady hand. Although the red lip plays a key role in this look, you don’t want to run the risk of forgetting your other favourite facial features.

Feona used a navy blue eyeliner along the upper eyelid, flicking out at the end of the eye. In order to create a thicker appearance, Feona didn’t blend any lines. shortly after, the foolproof Paul and Joe mascara was used. As this look doesn’t require a particular shade of red, pick your favourite and apply with a lip brush.

Afterwards, coat with a similar colour lipgloss, et voila!

The Pink Lip

Start ignoring the conventions because pink doesn’t have to be segregated to the summer months! Just because the attention will be on your lips, doesn’t mean that you should ignore your base, so start with the same foundation tips as previously mentioned.

With this make up look the eyebrows are lightly dusted with eyebrow powder, keeping the entire eye area very low-key, keeping the focus on the luminous pink lips.

Afterwards, concentrate on the eyes using lashings of Paul and Joe Mascara in order to waken up the eye area, whilst preserving  the balance of the rest of your face.

Keeping the foundation and eyes subtle, Feona used a 305 lipstick shade, again applying with a foolproof lip brush. By using a brush you eliminate any risk of bleeding and smudging. Plus, the precision of the brush makes the process of applying lipstick so simple.

If you prefer a more matte look, opt out of any lipgloss coatings. A pink lip looks fab with blonde hair so don’t be afraid to rock it this winter!

Paul and Joe Lipstick

Not only is the Paul and Joe lipstick selection stunning, but its incredibly innovative and economical. When purchasing your first Paul and Joe lipstick, you have the choice of a selection of trendy printed cases or you can go for the standard , elegant pink and white plastic case. Once you have run out there is no need to cry! Simply purchase a top up and slip it back into your favourite case!

So why don’t you give some of these make-up trends a go and in the mean time, pop in to see Jane at the Maya Rose Boutique!

Happiness can be a choice

I am a believer that you are the master of your own destiny. Reading a book called ‘The Secret’ effectively changed the way I experienced life. Primarily, I had understood the message of positive thinking but I was unsure about it. ‘Was it really that effective?’ I wondered.

After a while, I began to see small changes that did appear to be slightly more positive each time. Not only did my life events become more positive and successful, but my mind became positive and the thoughts that grew inside it. Within due time, I have now become a believer of this wonderful energy that we are able to experience around us. I’ve learnt that even if The Secret isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, what’s wrong with positive thinking instead of negative? It’s far more proactive and in keeps your energies in tune with your body and soul.

At the end of the day, the beginning of dusk and twilight, during the dead of the night – we are the sole guardian of our happiness.

These pictures reflect a memory that I was able to experience with some individuals who bring positive energy to my life. The simple things like an autumn walk through a park, observing the wildlife and the different levels of nature, are enough to make us feel happy and satisfied.

Very often, we are thrown a challenge that completely smacks us in the face, leaving us entirely disorientated. The way to handle these moments can be simple. Keep moving, get back up and delve into the happiness that you are going to attract into your life.

Some days, I want to stay in bed forever to never be woken because it’s far easier than facing the world and the complications that it brings. The fact that these thoughts enter my head just goes to show that each day is a challenge for me, but I prove to myself that happiness is worth it because I get out of bed and get on with my day. It’s effortless to be sad but for some reason its incredibly grueling to be happy. That’s why it feels so good when we achieve it. Happiness is worth fighting for. It doesn’t always arrive in our lap unbeknownst to us. Often, we have to work to be happy – it’s one of life’s marvelous challenges because you understand that being happy and content is the most rewarding feeling you can experience. In order to spread this happiness on to other people, we ourselves need to start by spreading the joy ourselves. Remain positive and uplift yourself. Things are going to get better if you let them.
